Cornell University offered me more than enough money to make it possible for me to go so I am officially going! By the end of August I will be living and learning on the other side of the country and loving every second of it :)

We Animals Book Project

Photojournalist & animal advocate, Jo-Anne McArthur, who is also the central human subject in Liz Marshall’s documentary about animals, “The Ghosts in Our Machine” (which I blogged about here). Is launching a book project & needs our help!

About the project:

Ten years ago I created a project called “We Animals.” What started as a small photo essay about our uses & abuses of animals has grown into an internationally renowned archive. From whale-poaching in the Antarctic to sheep farming in Australia, from zoos in North America to macaque farms in Southeast Asia, the project has grown to cover a lot of ground.

My goals have always been to educate people about our treatment of animals. To reduce their suffering. To widen our circle of compassion to include non-human animals. To make animal industries visible, & accountable.

One more way that We Animals can do this is through this book project. We are trying to broaden our horizon & diversify our audience. By supporting this book project, you’ll be supporting these goals as well.

Today (April 24th) is World Day for Animals in Laboratories

This day is about commemorating the animals that have suffered and continue to suffer horribly so that we can deem what we use in our every day lives as “safe”. It is estimated that 100 million animals suffer and die in laboratories every year across the globe by being poisoned, burned, blinded, starved, force-fed and mutilated. These animals suffer and live in fear every single day of their existence.

Thankfully, there are non-animal alternatives to experiments available to replace these tests, but at the moment, they are not being replaced at a fast enough rate. The Doctor Hadwen Trust is one of the charities that fund research into alternatives to animal testing and their website can be found here if you want to know more.

If you would like to raise awareness yourself, Animal Aid can post you a “stop animal experiments” pack which includes an information booklet and leaflets that you can give out. The pack can be requested here.

In the meantime, you can help reduce the suffering of animals by choosing cruelty-free items. Every change you make, no matter how small, matters and you could save the lives of animals everywhere by making these easy changes and we will be one step closer to abolishing these horrific practices.
